A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

Laibach IV

Location: Arena, Baumgasse 80, 1030 Wien, Österreich

Even when seeing them for the fourth time, Laibach easily surprise and impress me. Without doubt, this is their best performance so far.

Buddy: David
Score: 5 out of 5
Merch: a nice Spectre t-shirt
Again? Can I subscribe? Am I already in Groupie mode?

As always, there is no support act. At the merchandise store, I realise that I am missing my Laibach belt from last year - hmmmmmmm.

For good reason, Laibach play the entire Spectre album tonight. Their recent work defines the band more precisely than ever before. Compelling electronic industrial music. Flawless sounds join distinct visuals. Nothing hails the past, all brand new or updated (e.g. the modern version of 'Leben-Tod' that no longer feels as heavy as lead). Laibach will probably never stop re-inventing themselves, but this Spectre tour is the pure essence of what this band is all about.

The first part of the gig is all 'Spectre'. It is very hard to point out to any highlights, maybe the brilliant 'Americana', 'Bossanova' or 'Eat Liver' that cannot disappoint live. And then, there is an 'Intermezzo' - actually my first break at a pop concert. A visual countdown of exactly 15 minutes, supported by Viennese waltz music. Yes, that's Laibach. I actually like concert breaks because it gives you some time to recollect and discuss what you've heard (probably some sign of age ;-). During the second part, the remainder of 'Spectre' is surrounded by some classics ('Leben-Tod', 'Warme Lederhaut', 'Tanz Mit Laibach', 'Brat Moj'). There is also some brilliant Iron Sky music (as always along with footage from the movie). The end comes with a tough version of 'Das Spiel ist Aus' - and a clear message from Milan Fras to move out (ergo: 'Raus - das Spiel ist aus'). We still hope that the Whistleblower video following this song is just the bridge to another encore, but no, it's over.

Some short impressions from part 1:

So time flew, this has been a compelling performance. It is so good to see Laibach in their best shape so far. They are one of these rare examples where a band simply does not stop growing and is capable to further evolve. 2014 finds Laibach in their best shape, and I am really glad that I made it to Arena Wien.

Highly recommended, and probably not my last one.
