A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

17 March 2009

Eagles Of Death Metal

Location: Arena, Industriegebiet Erdberg, 1030 Vienna, Austria
I joined Pez to this gig on last minute, and I had not been aware of this band before. Arena was packed to the last corner, for good reason.

(Although the sound of this video is not that great, I like how the bass hammers into the mic of the camera if you listen with headphones ;-)

Buddy: Pez (thanks so much for taking me with you)

Aother gig? Yeah

More to follow, ticket missing currently

28 January 2009

Helmet

Location: Szene Wien, Hauffgasse 26, 1110 Vienna, Austria
What Helmet has in common with Nine Inch Nails is that the group is essentially the band leader. Page Hamilton is the only remaining original band member and apparently the driving force behind the entire idea. Considering the strong influence of Helmet on prog rock (whatever that means), it is a must to see them.

How cool is this? All band members signed my ticket!!! :-)

Buddies: Harald and his mate Christian, Jochen and brothers were there as well
Score: 4 out of 5 stars
Another gig? Yes, with new songs.

20 December 2008

Hate May Return & Many Others

Location: Viper Room, Landstraßer Hauptstraße 38, 1030 Vienna, Austria
My brother knows these young dudes, so we went on their gigs two times. And I liked it both times, a lot.

Buddies: Harald
Score: 4 out of 5
Another gig: Absolutely!

We are only there for Hate May Return. This time, the sound in the Viper Room is far from perfect. We see a very dedicated, passionate Metalcore (?) band. It's fun, it's powerful, just as that type of music is for. Cliff, the vocalist, shouts and cries his guts out, the guitars are heavy and fast. Just great. Good to see such young guys with such professionalism and dedication. Highly recommended, as long as you do not care that you might be held as the father/mother of one of the guys in the crowd *ggg*.

28 October 2008

Brad Mehldau Trio

Location: Konzerthaus Wien, Lothringerstraße 20, 1030 Vienna, Austria
If you need some warmth and light during the ugly autumn season, and you're just waiting for the winter sun to finally arrive, go either to Slayer or to such a concert :-).

Buddies: Cloudy, Bridget, Jakob
Score: 4 out of 5
Another gig? Definitely in October or even better November
Brad Mehldau might be the quintessential modern jazz pianist. His music is full of silence and warmth, no fast virtuosity without musical passion. It's very warm jazz, and for that reason so good to get into a happy mood. No happy music, but music for the heart. Jazz trios are perfect in that respect, they always produce that minimalistic sound that leaves much air for each instrument to breathe. Jazz trios are either boring or overwhelming (well, a bit of an overstatement :-).

I leave this gig with a feeling of peace and gratefulness. More autumn leaves can come...

Deduction for some lengths in the gig.
