A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

Black Sabbath - The End

Location: Stadthalle, Gablenzg. 21, 1150 Wien, Österreich
So I finally make it before they stop - but why do they stop?

Buddies: Ecki, Christian, Marion (Olivia and Stolli in the magic circle)
Score: 5 out of 5
Merch: nope
Again? There will be none.

This is my first farewell tour of a band - yes, the bands of my youth start retiring. Not some band, but Black Sabbath. I am a late fan of them, it actually took some time for me to be able to appreciate their incredible impact on today's metal - and of course their music in the first place.

If you read about health and other problems, you understand why they stop. But as soon as they are on stage you start wondering why. There is still so much passion in these godfathers of metal. Ozzy has a bit of a rocky start, with his tune being a half-tone or a tone below the music. But his vocal performance significantly increases in the second half. Geezer plays punchy bass lines that drive each songs along with the Tommy's drums. And then of course Tony - he is the main reason for me being here. His worn-out SG has this Black Sabbath signature sound, still a fresh, compelling sound.

As Christian puts it: You must also see and hear this music live in order to really appreciate it. You must see the power of this band at stage, you must feel this massive sound, and you must appreciate the dedication of many fans. This is why live performances of metal music can be so special - and this was a very special event.

Another surprise is the sound in Stadthalle Wien. I probably never had such good sound experience here. No mud, but very clear and loud enough. The visuals focus on the band itself on a huge screen behind them - that's why I can see a lot from even rather far behind.

The setlist also surprises a bit. A start with the very first song of their first album - cool. No song from their brilliant 13 album. But Behind the Wall of Sleep also from the first album, one of my favorites.

Here is the setlist according to setlist.fm:
Black Sabbath
Fairies Wear Boots
After Forever
Into the Void
Snowblind
War Pigs
Behind the Wall of Sleep
N.I.B.
Hand of Doom
Rat Salad
Iron Man
Dirty Women
Children of the Grave
Paranoid

After the obligatory Paraniod, it is the end with many 'thank you's and 'we love you all's from Ozzy. Even a final curtain, so it seems that they really mean it to end that all now.

All in all, this was much more than I expected, and besides the final curtain, this never felt like farewell. With their studio albums back home, it is definitely no farewell to their music for me, but much inspiration to go back into their music.
