A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

14 September 1986

Iron Maiden & The Waysted & Guests

Location: Donauinsel, 1220 Vienna, Austria
It is my very first heavy metal gig, and in these times, I am already completely into the music. These are the times of Iron Maiden, so the stage was very impressive and the entire gig is a blast. Open air on Donauinsel, just great (as I read on a Maiden fanpage, it's been their largest and only open air gig in Austria of their career so far).

Buddies: Action, Han+Lisi (THX MATE FOR THE TICKET), Herb, Pez, Wal and other buddies from HL
Score: 5 out of 5
Another gig: Rather not in these times :-)

First-time gigs are always special. This here is my first huge open air metal gig, this hardly can go wrong - and it didn't. Everything started in the middle of the day at 1 p.m. at very nice weather. Many local bands from Vienna that played their music at a side-stage until dawn. Frankly I do not remember them at all, maybe Blind Petition a bit, but hey, it's been metal, so it's been decent. I do not remember The Waysted at all (just read that on a Maiden fan page).

Iron Maiden is just about to release their "Somewhere In Time" album - not yet available at the time of this gig. In retrospect, this album has been the only synth guitar album of Iron Maiden, comparable with Judas Priest's "Turbo". I was always more fond of Priest, but in direct comparison of the sound, Iron Maiden did the better job with their use of synth guitars (IMHO).

I even found a setlist of the gig that quite fits to my own recollection:

Intro (Vangelis: The Bladerunner)
Caught Somewhere In Time (I remember that this was a very very good opener)
2 Minutes To Midnight
Sea Of Madness
Children Of The Damned
Stranger In A Strange Land
Wasted Years
Rime Of The Ancient Mariner
Walking On Glass (Instrumental)
Where Eagles Dare
Heaven Can Wait
Flight Of Icarus
Hallowed Be Thy Name
Iron Maiden
=-=-= Encores =-=-=
The Number Of The Beast
Run To The Hills
Running Free
Sanctuary

Look at the length of that gig - wow. I also remember that the appearance of Eddy was special this time: The head rising below the drums, and the hands rising below the guitarists. Nice effect.

So there is no question that this gig earns the maximum score - at least for me personally. For sure, it significantly contributed to my addiction for live gigs. Just the perfect start for further gigs.

But look into YouTube these days, in particular look at their outfit - just outrageous *ggg*. But these are the 80ies, and then this outfit was just ok, if not fine. Definitely other times.
