A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

In Flames (Wovenwar, While She Sleeps)

Location: Gasometer, Guglgasse 6, 1110 Wien, Österreich
Metal gigs can be strange animals. Sometimes you leave the venue in a cheerful mood, but without really lasting impressions. This has been my personal experience at Amon Amarth. But sometimes, metal gigs can ignite an inferno, and this was what happened here.

Buddy: Tom (all photos courtesy of him, thank you!)
Score: 5 out of 5
Merch: Wovenwar Hoody
Again: yep :-)

Both support acts impress. While She Sleeps from England play pure metal and are the perfect start into the evening. Maybe it has been a bit too enthusiastic of them to ask the crowd for a Moshpit, but we liked it anyways.

Then come Wovenwar, which is a follow up of former As I Lay Dying bandmates with a new vocalist. It's more melodical and very powerful. The stage is all black. Except for the last song, a ballad, I liked everything I lot, so I went for a nice hoody. I sill dig into this band in further detail :-)

After these perfect support acts, In Flames take the crowd easily. No logo, no amps on stage, just the band and light. It is an intense gig from the very beginning, and the crowd knows the songs. It still takes a few songs, then a real inferno breaks out: Perfect songs in perfect sound, the band playing near to perfection. These are the moments why to go to a metal gig, because no other style can match this intense atmosphere.

Video of guy onstage:

Apart from great music, the vocalist surprises. In some breaks, he just starts talking in a very jolly mood. He explains us that they like Austria because also women wear beards here, so that's why they feel at home :-). He also reminds us that looking into shitty smartphone screen is not what we should do for being here. Still in some other break, he invites a fan to the stage in order to shoot his smartphone video from up here, giving the guy a really good experience.

Despite a significant volume, no hum the day after. Definitely bands to keep in touch with.
