A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

Tool & Mastodon

Location: Wiener Stadthalle, 1150 Vienna, Austria
Tool are like nothing else, and I have their recordings since 'Undertow'. Live performances are also unique, to say the least. Perfect musicians meet a perfect show, still, some things were not that great.

Buddy: Rainer

Score: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Another Gig? Absolutely

I actually like Mastodon since their awarded 'Crack The Skye' album, but they are just not a very good live band. Sound has been a loud slush. Vocal performance does not match with the recordings.
Tool. Musicians first. It's fascinating how a single guitar and a bass substitute each other if played by gifted musicians. Drums deliver much more than rhythm, it's interwoven. Vocal performance is great as well, yet, the gas mask that Mr. Keenan wears (somtetimes also during singing) is rather strange. But his explanation is funny anyway: 'You smoke so much, guys, I need a mask.' - I could not agree more.

The stage is impressively huge and full of exiting ideas. The green laser lightshow during 'Vicarious' is mind-blowing - a green layer that went above our heads back the entire auditorium. Just phantastic.

Any downsides at this gig? Yes, sadly, so many young people were dragged out unconciously, very probably due to certain substances. If you pay that money, it's amazing how you end up early in some hospital bed. One guy even does not make the opener, his friend drags him out, one shoe missing. I still remember that scene, he must have been approx. half of my age. It's not the band's responsibility, but still a sad experience during an otherwise great gig.

So a half of a star deduction due to Mastodon sound and high price.
