A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

29 March 2007

Nine Inch Nails

Location: Wiener Gasometer, Industriegebiet Erdberg, Guglgasse 12, 1110 Vienna, Austria
Finally the gig I've been waiting for so long. NIN captured me entirely since "Pretty Hate Machine", so a gig was a must. Big drawback: just got tickets for the galleries - OMG! Can this work out?

Buddies: Frantischek (thanks mate for arranging the ticket)
Score: 4 out of 5
Merchandize: Tour T-Shirt in military green

Another Gig: Any time, without doubt.

Imagine that the only chance of seeing NIN is on the gallery, just sitting there, standing up strictly forbidden. Security guys all around the place. It's a bit like in the movies. Some would say that in my age, a seat on the galleries is enough, if NIN is concerned. *ggg* - Surprisingly, it did work out rather nicely. Sound and view are decent enough. Seats are cozy, and at least you could drink something during the gig (which was strictly forbidden at the Disturbed gig - which was highly disturbing).NIN do not disappoint. It's a very energetic gig, unfortunately not that much from "Year Zero" (one of my favorite albums, but not out then), and I do not know these songs anyway. All the classics are there in tough versions, be it "Sin" (live much better than in studio), "Terrible Lie" (same), "Closer", "Hurt", "Something I can Never Have". Some very positive surprises are there as well, for example "Eraser", just a great instrumental from the "Downward Spiral", but never expected live in 2007.Trent Reznor apparently steers everything, and somehow he is always in a rather fragile mood at gigs. It's a quite frantic mood, not pure joy in playing, but also something that haunts him. But isn't that what NIN stands for in the first place? Somehow I would like to see a more stable band around him, but unfortunately that seems impossible.

Nevermind, great gig. Hopefully another one on the floor before the stage, let's hope.

PS: As I learned later, NIN even did another gig in Vienna a day later, so they really had a good run this year in my hometown - rather impressive.
