Another Gig: Absolutely!
This is a review of Slayer, but not Megadeth. While Megadeth deserves respect as a metal band that shaped the genre some time ago, it's simply not my music anymore (even not from a nostalgic point of view as e.g. Paul Di Anno had been). It is understandable if you do not like listening to Slayer on a daily basis at home. But live, and from a band such as Slayer, is is virtually impossible not to feel the energy that this band is able to create during their gigs. From the opener (World Painted Blood - a very good opener) to the infernal end (Angel of Death), it is pure passion for fast, brutal, yet convincing music. These guys, along with their Marshall walls and a gigantic drum set, are on stage for their music, no show needed, no jumping around, no Eddie or other puppet (sorry Dave Mustaine, did you really need that???). Tom Araya's appearance is still that of a young tough dude. Kerry King, as always, a maniac on his guitar. And Dave Lombardo is the only drummer that can handle Slayer properly. Here is the setlist with some comments:World Painted Blood (a very good opener)
Hate Worldwide
War Ensemble
Postmortem
Temptation
Dead Skin Mask
Silent Scream (one of these songs where dave lombardo seems to explode)
The Antichrist (great classic, always so good to hear)
Americon (a very good new song, nice lights in stars'n'stripes colors)
Payback
Seasons in the Abyss (one of these must-hear Slayer songs)
Snuff
South of Heaven (irresistible in connection with...)
Raining Blood (yesssss, the darkest of dark music, standing still is impossible)
Black Magic (another classic and must-hear)
Angel of Death (the end, there cannot be anything after it)Half of a point deducted for a less-than-glorious sound, but we know that from Gasometer, especially if you are a looser like me that stands far way behind ;-).
Now we know why it's called the "European Carnage Tour 2011". Awesome gig (as expected)! Pat O'Brien has been a dignified substitution for Jeff Hanneman. Amazing how quick he's been able to adopt Jeff's playing style just in a few weeks' time. Kerry rules. \m/
