A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

The Joy Formidable

Location: Szene Wien, Hauffgasse 26, 1110 Vienna, Austria
The Joy Formidable bring formidable joy to Vienna. Another example for how powerful trios can be.

Buddy: Michael
Score: 5 out of 5
Merchandize: both CDs
Another Gig: for sure

Surprisingly Szene Wien is not sold out, we expected much more fans. Also because the ticket price is simply a bargain. As working class heroes, we miss the support act (we hear their last song, which deserves a honorable mention).

I am very curious how The Joy Formidable are able to translate their music on stage. Well, they outperform live. Three communicating musicians on stage, plus two vocals summing up to that trademark sound that really outstanding bands are able to create. I dig into this very special single-coil distortion I already know from Mogwai. Of course, Ritzy Bryan leads the band with her powerful guitar playing and her distinguished voice. From one moment to the other, she can virtually explode on stage. She grins into the crowd, a second later stares into you like a maniac and unveils a firework on her guitar.

The Joy Formidable have a seldom message: It's the music that counts. I connected to their second album 'Wolf's Law' by this live performance - still thinking that the production of 'Wolf's Law' is slightly 'overdone' (don't know how to tell otherwise). Live, the new songs reach me immediately.

The Joy Formidable also deserves this band name for mainly playing in major scale - and it is no secret that composing good music in major scale is harder than in minor scale.

At one point in time, the band discusses with the crowd, which Austrian festival it would be worth playing (Frequency, of course :-). It was a nice moment. The gig closes with a fulminant version of 'Whirring', its solo ending up in a noisy Nirvana. Everybody leaves happy.

Here is a small potpourri of their performance (HD available by switching below):
