A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

25 November 2013

Amon Amarth (Carcass)

Location: Gasometer, Guglgasse 6, 1110 Vienna, Austria
Vikings in Vienna, they greet us in polished German. Loud music in a packed Gasometer, more than enough cigarette smoke and three decent beer douches - in other words: a metal concert as it should be :-)

Buddies: Stolli, Harald, Tom
Score: 3.5 out of 5
Merchandize: I was too late for a great-looking Carcass t-shirt :-(
Another Gig? One is just fine.

Unfortunately we miss out Carcass and head straight into the main act. It's a shame that I am not much prepared musically, but it doesn't matter that much. It becomes immediately clear to me why Amon Amarth can easily fill Gasometer tonight. It's a professional, yet entertaining gig without flaws. A very energetic start, then some length in between, and a very powerful ending. Knowing the music a bit more would have helped a bit - but I am not so much into this Viking stuff :-).

You can read that AA's style is labeled 'Melodic Death Metal', which sounds a bit odd to me. My first impression is that riffing seems to be inspired quite a bit by Iron Maiden. But as vocalist Johan Hegg brings it to the point during the encore: 'Come on folks, this is death metal, you do not have to know the lyrics, just sing along with me.' This frontman entertains the crowd during the set breaks solo - he is just the right guy for this job. Having written about some length in between, the only slight complaint for me was some lack of variety - but death metal knows no ballads, everything is straight-forward.

Never mind, it has been a great evening, and the beer dried up fast - not to forget the otherwise most peaceful and respectful crowd I could remember - but probably also because us old guys were standing way back and far away from the red zone... Thanks Vikings, good luck for your further foray.
