A Word

***Wacken 2018 - view from the Jägermeister Deer

Live gigs are essential. Remembering them is sometimes even more fun (but writing tedious ;-). Short stories about great gigs - and the others as well. This is strictly non-commercial and just my humble taste/opinion.

18 February 2014

Die Krupps II (Chant, Vigilante)

Location: Szene Wien, Hauffgasse 26, 1110 Wien
Got two tickets for this gig - thanks to Michael and Harald (he unfortunately canceled in last minute). It's so good to see Die Krupps back again with two stellar support acts.

Buddies: Michael and David
Score: 5 out of 5
Merchandize: a signed Chant CD
Another Gig? Any time!

The evening starts with Chant, two percussionists that like drumming to industrial electronic music. What sounds a bit strange turns out as a really good act. Very intelligent Industrial music reminds me a bit of the young NIN or My Life With The Kill Cult (at least at first glance). It's very good music, so I buy the 2013 CD and have it signed by Bradley Bills. Keep on going, this is great music.

Vigilante follows with a no-prisoners approach. Into your face Industrial music with Iván Muñoz shouting the guts out of his body, jumping like crazy through the crowd while performing. Even the rather cool Viennese crowd cannot resist. Apart from his political statements, this guy wins us with his pure ambition.
Die Krupps have a bit of a rocky start with technical issues. Due to broken in-ears, Bradley Bills, who also drums for Die Krupps, has an apparent hard time through this gig to keep tempo. So when Jürgen Engler asks in "Metal Machine Music" into the crowd "Why Do We Act Like Machines?", his drummer's hard times would be the answer :-). But this hardly impacts the overall performance: Die Krupps again demonstrate why their influence on electronic music cannot be over-estimated. Despite some harsh critizism, also the new stuff from the 2013 "Machinists of Joy" album simply kicks ass. So with the two very interesting support acts, this evening turned out to be a perfect one - including a very clean Szene Wien sound.
And after the gig, we are very lucky to briefly chat with Jürgen, remembering the 1995 gig in Arena Wien - which is now nearly 20 years ago! Jürgen: "I don't feel any older since then, to the opposite, I could have performed longer today...". And then, like a real die-hard fan, we also take some photos with him and have the ticket signed by Jürgen and Ralf Dörper. Another gig to remember.
